People who have attacked our government range from neo-Nazis and other racist and religious radicals to members of armed militias. A look at some of the most notorious attacks or plots the last 15 years:

Oct. 9, 1995

An Amtrak train is derailed near Hyder, Ariz., killing one person and injuring dozens of others. Anti-government messages signed "Sons of Gestapo" are left behind, and perpetrators have yet to be caught.

 

Dec. 18, 1995

An IRS employee in Nevada finds a plastic drum packed with ammonium nitrate and fuel in the parking lot behind a Reno IRS building. Tax protester Joseph Martin Bailie is arrested along with Ellis Edward Hurst.

 

Oct. 11, 1996

Seven members of Mountainer Militia are arrested in a plot to blow up the FBI's national fingerprint records center in West Virginia.

 

May 3, 1997

Anti-government extremists set fire to a Colorado Springs, Colo. IRS office, injuring a firefighter. Agents later arrest five men in connection with the arson, believed to be a protest against taxes.

 

July 4, 1997

Bradley Playford Glover and other armed anti-government activists are arrested near Fort Hood, Texas, hours before an alleged planned invasion of an army base .

 

Nov. 5, 1999

James Kenneth Gluck is arrested in Florida after writing a 10-page letter to judges in Colorado threatening to "wage biological warfare" on a county justice center. In Gluck's home, police find materials to make the deadly poison ricin.

 

2001

Shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, letters containing anthrax were sent to lawmakers and news organizations. Postal facilities, U.S. Capitol buildings and many private offices were shut for inspection and cleaning. The FBI determined that Army scientist Bruce Ivins was the sole culprit behind the mailings that killed five people.

 

Jan. 18, 2003

James D. Brailey is arrested after a raid on his home turns up heavy weapons. An informant tells the FBI that Brailey was plotting to assassinate the governor of Washington. Brailey pleads guilty to weapons charges.

 

Oct. 25, 2004

Demetrius "Van" Crocker is arrested after trying to purchase ingredients for sarin nerve gas and C-4 explosives from an undercover agent. The FBI says Crocker told the agent he hates the government and it would be a "good thing" if somebody could detonate a weapon of mass destruction in Washington, D.C.

 

June 8, 2008

Six people are arrested in a rural area of north-central Pennsylvania after officials find stockpiles of weapons allegedly intended for attacks on government officials.

 

June 1, 2009

Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad opens fire outside a Little Rock military recruiting center, killing one soldier and wounding another.

 

June 10, 2009

James von Brunn, an 88-year-old white supremacist, shoots a security guard to death at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum before being critically wounded by officers.

 

Nov. 5, 2009

Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army major, allegedly opens fire at Fort Hood military base in Texas, killing 13 people and wounding many others. The motive behind the shooting is unclear. Hasan was in contact with a radical American-Yemeni cleric before the attack.

 

Jan. 4, 2010

Johnny Lee Wicks opens fire in a federal building in Las Vegas, killing a security guard and wounding a U.S. marshal before being shot to death. Wicks was apparently angry about having a lawsuit over his Social Security benefits dismissed.

 

Feb. 18, 2010

Andrew Joseph Stack III flies a plane into a building with IRS employees, killing himself, a manager in the building and injuring several others. Authorities later found writings in which Stack described a long-standing dispute with the IRS and a hatred of the government.

 

March 4, 2010

John Patrick Bedell is killed after firing on Pentagon police outside the military headquarters. The motive for the shooting is unclear. Internet postings suggest Bedell was fascinated with conspiracy theories, libertarian ideas and the science of warfare.

 

Nine charged in radical U.S. Christian militia plot

March 28, 2010

Nine alleged members of a Christian militia group that was girding for battle with the Antichrist were charged with plotting to kill a police officer and slaughter scores more by bombing the funeral - all in hopes of touching off an uprising against the U.S. government. The Hutaree militia members were arrested in raids in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.

April 27, 2010

A judge has ordered Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, charged in the shooting death of an Arkansas soldier, to undergo a mental examination after he allegedly attacked two jailers. Muhammad's murder trial has also been delayed, pending a hearing on defense funding.

 

We have enemies who are Muslims as well as Christians (and may be from other religions); except for one exception, above list does not identify terrorists by their religion but you can figure out by their names.
