Right to information Act, 2005, has been widely regarded as one of the most important legislations passed by Parliament since Independence. It is arguably one of the best transparency laws in the world. The Act gives a statutory status to citizens' democratic right to be informed about matters of governance and places an onus on the government to progressively make its functioning and dealings comprehensible to the public. The law goes to the extent of making a government official personally and financially liable for not providing information that has been asked for by a member of the public. However, a law demanding transparency in public service, which is steeped in so much dishonesty, is bound to get mired in problems of interpretation, some real, some contrived. That it's a relatively new law is another reason behind problems of interpretation. The fight for right to information is the fight for survival of democracy in India. The stakes are too high for us to ever give up. So we'll never give up. Hence the present Federation is formed keeping in mind above objectives of the Act.
