On June 21st 2011 our Mother Gulnar Remu was abruptly diagnosed with AML an acute form of Leukemia. Acute Myeloid Leukemia is the overcrowding and overproduction of white blood cells in the bone marrow. Part of her treatment may require a stem cell transplant and her only sibling is not a suitable match.
Our Mom's chances of finding the best match are the highest from donors of East Indian background. In Canada, only 3% of the donors on the National stem cell/bone marrow network (OneMatch) are identified as South Asian. Overall ethnic minorities are severely under-represented on the BMDW network (Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide).
Fewer than 30% of patients will find a compatible donor from a family member, 70% rely on the generosity of unrelated donors for available sources of stem cells. Our Mom Gulnar unfortunately falls under this group and requires a stem cell transplant as part of her treatment.
Here is how you can help:
REGISTER yourself today as a bone marrow donor with your local bone marrow registry. In Canada, this can be done at www.OneMatch.ca, the U.S. marrow registry can be located at www.marrow.org.
The process is as simple as a cheek swab so please spread the word and act quickly to help our mom and others suffering like her
