Pernicious anemia is also known as Biermerâs Anemia or Addisonâs Anemia or Addison-Biemer Anemia. This anemia is one of the types of megaloblastic anemia. This is caused by the loss of the gastric parietal cells, which leads to the loss of vitamin B12. Hence, it is said that pernicious anemia is caused due to the loss of vitamin B12 in the body. The autoimmune destruction of the gastric parietal cells leads to the problems in the intrinsic factor (IF). The absorption of vitamin B12 depends on the IF and hence normally we say that this anemia is caused by the loss of vitamin B12. In this kind of anemia, the immature, large and nucleated blood cells called as megaloblasts circulate in the blood but will not carry out the function of transferring the oxygen to the tissues.
