Re: Happy Diwali

I cannot wish with flowers,
For they belong to God;
I cannot wish with sweet foods,
For they are man-made all!

I cannot wish with rare gifts,
For they may not be apt;
I cannot wish with greetings,
For they are soon forgot!

I cannot wish with crackers,
For they make noise and smoke;
I cannot wish with clothes new,
For they can lose their charm!

But I can wish with words of love,
Those come straight from my heart;
Today, ( Oct 26 )good won or evil;
Let's share this truth by art!

Let light prevail or darkness,
And illumine this world;
Let love of human
life spread,
And glorify the Lord!
Happy Diwali,2011

I want to share a story of an event which occurred a few thousand years back. It was Amavasya,- the night when there is no moon. At dusk many people had collected at the seashore to watch the sunset. People waited with great joy and wonder as the sun was slowly setting at the horizon. The sky was a riot of colours, -orange, red, yellow, shades of blue interacting with each other, and creating different pictures which were changing by the minute! The sun was going down…down…down until only the last rim could be seen. People were watching and expected the sun to set completely in a minute. But an unusual event occurred. While everyone waited for a minute, two minutes, five minutes, ten minutes, the sun had stopped its onward journey. The sun was refusing to set! Something unusual and unnatural was happening; could this be a signal of a major catastrophe, a disaster? Panic set in as people ran hither and thither with anxiety.

A little girl of six picked up courage and asked the sun, 'Oh Lord! Why don't you carry on your journey? We are all worried.' The Sun said, 'Today is Amavasya and I am worried about the complete darkness which will engulf all of you'.

 A little lamp which had some oil in it said, ' Oh Lord Sun, give me your spark, and I will light up; and then there will not be complete darkness.' The Sun gave a spark to the little lamp which lit up, and the Sun set in its onward journey. The little lamp gave its spark to many other lamps…. And that was the first DEEPAWALI.
