TIGERS THREATENED

The forests are under threat from coal mining.

• Coal mining in the Chandrapur region of Maharashtra is destroying tiger habitat ^[1].
• In Singrauli it has displaced people ^[2].
• Coal mining also causes air pollution and destroys water sources.

Still the coal and power ministries want more coal.

There is a huge rush to open up forest areas for coal mining. The Ministry of Environment and Forests is under tremendous pressure to allow this forest destruction ^[3]. The ongoing debate is one-sided and the forests need all the help they can get. Public opposition to the destruction of forests must be seen now. Together, we can stop this!

We need a people’s movement like Chipko,^[4] or the current anti-corruption movement. To symbolise this struggle for the safety of our forests, we are asking people to become citizens of a virtual land called Junglistan - the country of the forests - and pledge to protect it from mining and show the government that we want our forests to remain intact.

You should sign up for citizenship of Junglistan because the forests are too valuable to be destroyed by mining.

Once you become a citizen of Junglistan, you will get an official Junglistan passport. The loss of forests is sad to imagine so we are trying to remind people of the joy that these beautiful places bring to so many - the joy one experiences while reading or watching the poignant images painted by stories like the Jungle Book.

These forests must be protected. There is enough coal in existing mines, along with renewable energy sources, and energy efficiency measures can meet our power needs.^{[5]Destroying more forests is unnecessary.}

Time is against us, we need to get together and act fast before all the forests disappear. Take action, help save the forests now.
