I was invited to deliver the Third Hegde Memorial Lecture at India Habitat Center, Delhi. The previous two in the series had been delivered by Montek Singh Ahluwalia of the Indian Planning Commission, and Lord Meghnad Desai of the British House of Parliament. I was advised that the topic I had picked was going to be controversial. The event was presided by the Chairman of FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry). Comments from the front row included one by Dinesh Trivedi, who later joined India's cabinet as Railway Minister, and who was recently pressured to resign for his 'act of disobedience' to Mrs. Mamata Banerjee. |
