Detained for safe food

Hi urvashi,

Twelve activists were detained and released after 12 hours. Charged with trespassing.

Support safe food.

Take the poll.

Twelve activists were detained for 12 hours. Why? They peacefully challenged Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar’s support for genetically modified crops. [1]

The opposition to harmful GM food is growing.[2] Hundreds of people joined a debate on Twitter to express their opinion on safe food. 14,000 have taken the poll and said no to GM food.

Have you shown your support for safe food yet? Start by taking this poll.

Tonnes of food grains rot in badly kept godowns in our country.[3] Instead of fixing this, our government wants to genetically modify our crops. Bio-tech companies are promoting their controversial technology as a solution. Unfortunately for us, responsible agencies like the Ministry of Agriculture think the same. [4]

The good news is that our country has not yet commercialised GM food crops.[5] The Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) bill, which will ease the approval of GM crops, has not yet been introduced in Parliament. [6] This is because people like us all over the country have been consistently opposing GM food.

There’s more. A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture [7] and a technical expert committee appointed by the Supreme Court [8] have recommended caution against this technology as well.

We’ve kept our food safe so far. We can do it again. Take this poll to show your support for safe food now!
