English is no saving Grace

English is no saving Grace

From: "Ram Gopal" <ramgopal_94@yahoo.com>

Hindu thought starts from the 'self' and ends at 'self'.  Very few Hindus think in terms of Hindu nation and nation state, (unlike Muslims, who have, since the 19th century, thinking in terms of Muslim 'Kaum' and Islamic State).  When you or I speak in favour of Hindi, it is in the national context. We have no means to measure the superiority or inferiority of any language. May be, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali and some other more languages have a richer literature or greater vocabulalry than Hindi. There is, however, no denying the fact that it is Hindi and Hindi alone which is understood and spoken throughout India, very much beyond the limits of the so-called Hindi belt. Lokmanya Tilak was a Maharashtrian and the tallest Congress leader of his time, but he was the one who pleaded Hindi as the national language. Much before him, Swami Dayanand Saraswati, (19th century), from Gujarat recognised Hindi as
the national language and learnt Hindi to write his great treatise, "Satyarth Prakash".  Upto 1918, Gandhi himself, hailing from Gujarat, talked of Hindi as the national language. So was the case with Veer Savarkar and nationalist leaders of Bengal and even South India. It is only after 'Independence' that opposition to Hindi started in a big way
. It is due to pro-Muslim Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru who wanted 'Urdu' to be the national language in the garb of 'HIndustani'. The education system and the political atmosphere created by the long Congress rule has fuelled the anti-Hindu and anti-Hindi wave.

I have personally gone from Kanyakumari to Cheerapunji in Meghalaya and from Jagannath Puri to Gujarat (Jamnagar). Every where, I found people conversing in Hindi. In the high mountainous area, Hindi is as prevalent as in Hindi heartland. Only in Chennai (Tamilnadu) I found local Hindus pretending not to understand Hindi, while a Tamil Muslim had no difficulty in understanding and answering in Hindi. The irony was that the music system in restaurants of Chinnai blarred Hindi songs, while the bearers showed complete ignorance about Hindi language. In Kottayaam (Kerala, the only State claiming 100% literacy), I found many salesmen or salesgirls in big shops and restaurants understanding neither Hindi nor English. Even so, they were courteous and took the help of their guardmen, (who were mostly from Nepal), to act as interpreters.

We have to explain to the anti-Hindi personnel that our case for Hindi is in the national context, not provincial. In the provinces the provincial languages will reign supreme. Likewise, we need English, French, Arabic, Persian, Russian, Chinese, etc. for dealings with foreign countries. We have to explain that, if English continues to occupy the space of Rajbhasha, it will damage not only Hindi and Indian nationalism but all provincial languages also. But, this is possible only when, Hindus start thinking in terms of Hindu nation and accept the need of making India a Hindu State. They have to be awakened to the hard fact that failure to make India a Hindu State is sure to lead Hindu India towards partly Islamic States, with Quranic law (Shariat), and partly Christian States, in Tribal belts, for which Indian Muslims and Christians are striving hard with the help of global Islamic and Christian States. Only Hindus, (including Jains, Bouddhs, Sikhs), have to fend for themselves.

Veer Savarkar and some other nationalists tried their best to retain the unity and integrity of Hindusthan, but failed simply because Hindu natioinalists were scattered in fragments and those wanting to bisect the country were and militarily stonger and united though they were fewer in number. Hindu failed then because they failed to stand as a nation and have been failing to secure their rightful place even in their own share of Partitioned Hindusthan. As a result, Muslims have Pakistan and Bangladesh as their fixed deposits and have a major share in Hindu India, even when they are a minority, (14.2 percent).

There are certain things to make a people a nation and a nation State. Language is one of these essential ingredients. It is upto Hindus and their leaders to choose their national language. Before Partition, Hindu nationalists from all parts favoured Hindi written in Devanagari script. There was a lengthy debate in the Constituent Assembly on this issue. The claim of Sanskrit was also considered. Ultimately, Hindi written in Devanagari was accepted as Indian Union's official language, but it was wrapped with such ifs and buts that Hindi is going farther and farther from the seat of power. In the same proportion, Hindus and Hinduism are getting deprived of their political importance, both in national and internatrional arenas.

Incidentally, Jawaharlal Nehru was only born in U.P. and accidentally in a Hindu family, according to his own version. He identified himself as a Kashmiri, not U.P. Wala. He was dead against Hindi as well as 'Vande Mataram', that is Hindu nationalism. In the Constituent Assembly, the Article in support of Hindi as the official language of the Union of India was passed not due to his support but inspite of his opposition. So far as I remember, the first great man  to support Hindi as the National language was Swami Dayanand Sarswati, the founder of the Arya Samaj, (in the 19th century), who hailed from Gujarat. The message was taken up and carried forward by Lokmanya Tilak, a Maharashtrian. Mahatma Gandhi, a Gujarati, was himself a great supporter of Hindi (as may be seen in his Hindi Swaraj written in 1909), but since 1920 under the influence of Maulana Azad and the like, he switched over to 'Hindustani', that was virtually Urdu. Savarkar, the great freedom fighter a nationalist and an author of Marathi and English both was another Maratha to support Hindi.

Anti – Hindi people have to consider the question of national language (and also the official language of Indian Union) in the light of the above position. If the majority of Hindus accept Sanskrit, let it be done soon without any ifs and buts.

English is no saving Grace.  Please don't make it as an angel!!
In the next 50 years the English speaking countries are going to collapse economically and become subservient to such dominant economies as that of China and India.
Russia developed its economy without English and as I said English won't be of any use to us in a very short while.
In respect of language the Chinese are saddled with millions of characters.  Their language will be quite artificial for another millenium.  Their language has no literature such as Tamil and Sanskrit have.  Tamil and Sanskirt are quite developed languages.  Technically Sanskrit is the most developed language that the world is trying to use to its advantage.
So, know the potential of your languages and the weakness of the European languages.  In terms of communication and culture any Indian language would defeat any European language 100 to 1.

...... as I said English won't be of any use to us in a very short while.

But all kinds of media are trying their best to impose English on all Bhaaratiya people. In Hindi films so far cast was given in English, but now even the name of Hindi films is given in English. Here is example of some names of Hindi films which are in English: Fruits and Nuts, Wanted, What is your Rashi, Jab We met, All the Best, Blue, Wake Up Sid,  Let's Dance, Jail, Acid Factory, Short Cut, Love Kichdi, London Dreams, Love Aajkal,  Aage se Right, Right yaa Wrong, Singh Better than King, Love Ka Tadka. One wonders where is Hindi in so called Hindi films where Hindi is not written any where in Hindi films, language is mostly Urdu and English and even names of Hindi films are in English.

When western people listen such names they wonder if they are English or Hindi films movies. It seems Hindi film have taken the responsibility of spreading English all over Bhaarat and even amongst Hindus living abroad. Another surprising aspect is that no Hindi media perople or general public take objection to such corrupt names of Hindi films.

This is far worse than the 'tsunami' prediction: as was noted previously, the political tsunami did strike but missed the target (viz. DMK).  Instead, it swept out the campsite (BJP) where our resident futurist was calling out from!
This self-styled futurist must be surveying a world different from what has been bothering Indian linguists.  Given the relatively poor spread and quality of India's education system, combined with its bias towards English as medium of instruction (even from as early as nursery / kindergarten), the linguists who have their legs firmly planted in the ground and with heads in the air and eyes open and minds in order are deeply worried that several of India's languages will dwindle in usage and lose their vitality over the next few generations.  Already the pidginisation or creolization of Indian languages is well underway: the TV channels are busy Anglicizing the languages.
Our futurist should also care to take a flight to Shanghai and walk through one of the huge bookshops.  Only then will he wake up to the fact as to how small is India's aggregate production of books in her languages compared to China's in Mandarin.  Take a look at the range of latest foreign titles (in the sciences, economics, politics, etc.) which are being translated into Mandarin.  That will be a good measure of how much of latest knowledge production in the English-speaking world is being ported over to Mandarin.
I can't speak for other Indian languages.  But as for Tamil, it has definite advantages over Mandarin, not just in terms of script.  For instance, in matters of word formation, to the extent that I have checked out, Tamil is way way ahead.  Let's take the word 'computer'.  The Mandarin equivalent means 'electric brain'.  Whereas theTamil equivalent is 'kaNini'.
'kaNi' means to compute.
'kaNini' means: that which computes.
If only the overall language policy and education system of India had been more worthy of a truly progressive nation, the Tamil language - in common with other Indian languages - would have advanced much further in terms of its usage and vocabulary.  In spite of the hurdles that were placed on the path of the language every step of the way, Tamil has still come through fairly well.  One has to be eternally grateful to the great Tamil scholars (e.g. MaRaimalai Adigal) and social reformers (e.g. Periyar, Arignar Anna) and other activists for recovering Tamil from its corruption by Sanskrit (manipravalam) and opening up the public space for its broader use.

Urdu is an adopted langugage by the people of Pakistan.   The majority are Punjabi, Pashtu, Sindhi and Baluchi.   Of these 4 languages two are of Iranic descent; Baluchi (Western-Iranic like Kurdish & Persian) and Pashto (Eastern-Iranic, just like Ossetian & Sogdian, etc.).
Urdu was brought to Pakistan by mohajirs refugees from UP, Bihar.  To keep a sense of unity it was adopted as the national language of intergration.   After the partition of Bangladesh, now the Mohajirs are hated by the Pakistani Punjabis and Pashtuns.
Yeah, I like these Indians who are against English because they tend to run into the Dravidian speakers who are dead set againt the adoption of Hindi as the national language of integration.    I know Tamilians here in the US who told me that they understand Hindi but are reluctant to speak just for the sake it is Hindi from up north.

It is due to these people that English is dominant language in Bhaarat.

Some interesting experiences.

In California, U.S.A. there is a very large and beautiful VietNamese Buddhist temple.

I had attended a prayer session in the temple. Some words from the prayer sounded familiar. So I asked the priest about its language. He answered that it is Sanskrit. However, they are now writing it in Roman script because the VietNamese script is very complicated.

The Filipinos after coming under the U.S. domination are now speaking English. Before that due to Spanish domination they spoke Spanish.

What did they speak before the Spanish domination? The answer was:: SANSKRIT

English for ever in Bhaarat

A Pakistani told me that he watches Urdu movies all the time. When I asked him where does he gets his movies from, he told me it is from India. What he meant and later clarified was he meant Hindi movies.
You see, it is Urdu that is being spoken in the north and the movies are in Urdu not Hindi. In reality it is Urdu. Now do you want the whole of India to learn Urdu? Why do you want us to learn and speak a Pakistani language?

Why not do something against the Hindi and other vernacular papers which are making us learn English words through local language newspapers. First of all, bring these Hindi language stupid

Editors to book for harming the interest of the Hindi people.

It is very clear that the Tamil Nadu Muslims in Chennai [half of them] were able to converse with you in Hindi because what you spoke is mostly Persianized Urudu of Kariboli type. Except Muslims, all over Tamil Nadu, Andhra [except Hydrabad], Kerala, Karnataka, most of W.Bengal people do not speak or understand Hindi. You think Hindi is understood all over India because you insist in talking to strangers in Hindi. All these people understand English better. I have seen Army officers in Ladakh will try to talk to the Ladakhi natives in Hindi without trying even to learn a word of their language. The Gujarathis, Sindhis, Punjabis and Bengalis in Chennai speak good Tamil. Also, Hindi [Hindustani] if it wants to get popular should change away from the Islamic, Persian and Urudu influence and change to a more Sanskritaized Hindusthani in speaking and writing. must be able to pronounce Dharma as such in stead of Dharm and Ramachandra not as Ramchandr. - So, sacrifices need in all directions. It is not an oneway street. We must develop a National language with contributions.

During the interview of 11th November, the Mother made some important remarks on the importance of Sanskrit. We are reproducing some extracts from the interview. This is what the Mother said:

The ideal would be, in a few years, to have a rejuvenated Sanskrit as the representative language of  India, that is, a Sanskrit spoken in such a way that—Sanskrit is behind all the languages of  India  and it should be that. This was Sri Aurobindo's idea, when we spoke about it. Because now English is the language of the whole country, but that is abnormal. It is very helpful for relations with the rest of the world, but just as each country has its own language, there should... And so here, as soon as one begins to want a national language, everyone starts quarrelling. Each one wants it to be his own, and that is foolish. But no one could object to Sanskrit. It is a more ancient language than the others and it contains the sounds, the root-sounds of many words. This is something I studied with Sri Aurobindo and it is obviously very interesting. Some of these roots can even be found in all the languages of the world—sounds, root-sounds which are found in all those languages. Well, this, this thing, this is what ought to be learnt and this is what the national language should be. Every child born in  India  should know it, just as every child born in  France  has to know French. He does not speak properly, he does not know it thoroughly, but he has to know French a little; and in all the countries of the world it is the same thing. He has to know the national language. And then, when he learns, he learns as many languages as he likes. At the moment, we are still embroiled in quarrels, and this is a very bad atmosphere in which to build anything. But I hope that a day will come when it will be possible. So I would like to have a simple Sanskrit taught here, as simple as possible, but not "simplified"—simple by going back to its origin... all these sounds, the sounds that are the roots of the words which were formed afterwards.

The cable, as disclosed by WikiLeaks, said that there is a concerted effort in south India by some Muslim men to get Hindu and Christian women to fall in love with them in order to convert them'. According to the police in Kerala, in most cases of 'love jihad', the victims are merely used as pawns in criminal activities. Many of the victims have no idea what they are getting into and often get into lured by the young men.
