Dear friends,

Dr. Kalam lived to serve, inspiring a vision for a better India at a lecture to students even as he drew his last breaths.

As we mourn for this great Indian leader and teacher, let's celebrate his legacy by building the biggest citizens' tribute anywhere in the world in the next 24 hours.

As a child, what Dr. Kalam lacked in wealth, he made up for with tenacity and big dreams -- rising to become India's leading scientist and "missile man" and eventually occupying one of the country's highest offices -- President of India. Despite all his power and achievements he remained humble and approachable -- and that's what made him a beloved leader.

A few years ago, Dr. Kalam started a campaign asking a simple question - "What can you do for the nation?" Let's pledge our commitment to a better India by answering that question again and share stories of how he inspired us. We'll gather all our messages and send them to his loved ones, the media, and other politicians to carry forward his vision of the kind of society we want.

Join now to honour this beloved leader and his legacy of service, and share this page widely to help get thousands of messages of hope from across India:

This quote from Dr. Kalam has inspired an entire generation: "We are all born with a divine fire in us. Our efforts should be to give wings to this fire and fill the world with the glow of its goodness." Let's unite to fill the world with that glow.

With sadness and hope,
Risalat, Danny, Dalia, Ricken and the rest of the Avaaz team
