Dubai Is Building A Huge Indoor Ski Slope So You Can Hit The Slopes In The Desert

As a city perched on the edge of a desert, Dubai may not be the first country you think of for a ski holiday - but all that could be about to change thanks to a new 1.2km indoor slope.

Despite temperatures hitting an average of 41 degrees Celcius during the summer, the indoor snow centre will break the record for longest indoor ski slope already set by another development in Dubai - a paltry 400m run.

Dubai doesn't tend to do things by halves, so as well as nearly a mile's worth of ski slope, the development, known as Meydan One, is also set to boast the world's tallest residential tower (711m tall), a 420m fountain, a shopping mall, a swanky hotel and a marina.

Of course, building the world's longest indoor ski slope and the world's tallest residential tower won't be quick, easy or cheap. In a typical show of Gulf Coast excess, the entire development is estimated to cost around 25 billion dirhams - that's £4.4 billion.

There's a loose time schedule of five years for the first phase of the project, with the plan being that it's ready in time for the United Arab Emirates to host World Expo 2020.
