Why CBCT is gaining popularity in ENT diagnostics

CBCT imaging

Cone Beam Computed Tomography CBCT has quickly become standard of care for clinical decisions in dentistry, but in recent years it has started to enter ENT practices as well. This is due to its ability to image structures three-dimensionally and visualize bone tissue with extremely thin section, high-resolution images.

CBCT imaging is beneficial, for example, in diagnosing the sinonasal region, cervical spine, maxillofacial trauma, and even in temporal bone diseases. Additionally, 3D reconstructions have turned out to be a smart tool both for surgical planning and postoperative evaluation, not to forget their role in easily understandable doctor-patient communication.

A CBCT system completes the ENT imaging needs, offering a cost-efficient, low radiation dose alternative to the conventional medical-computed tomography (CT) solutions. The main advantages of CBCT technology over medical CT are its ability to provide substantially lower doses of ionic radiation; its ability to image extremely thin slices (sub-millimeter – 0.1 to 0.2 mm) in axial, coronal, sagittal- and sub-planes; the automatic generation of surface and volume reconstructions; and the high resolution of bony details of the maxilla, mandible and temporal bone.
