Weight regain after dieting is generally related to a "lack of will" responsible for a return to old eating habits. To better understand the real reasons for the failure of defined medium and long term, researchers have analyzed the fate of hormones regulating appetite, away from the weight loss. Postmenopausal women and men, overweight or obese (n = 50) were subjected to a very low calorie diet, including meal replacement, for eight weeks. Subjects who had lost at least 10% of initial weight after the reintroduction phase of food, to stabilize in the weeks 9 and 10. Of the 50 subjects enrolled, 43 have achieved the goal weight, averaging a 14% decrease (-13.5 kg) of initial weight at the end of week 10. Only the data of 34 patients followed through week 62 were included in the analysis. It shows, at the end of the initial phase of the plan, changes in hormone levels that regulate hunger and satiety.
Thus, there is a reduction in plasma leptin, peptide YY, cholescystokinine of, insulin and amylin. In contrast, the initial weight loss is associated with an increase in ghrelin, GIP (Gastric Inhibitory Polypeptide) and pancreatic polypeptide. Above all, hormonal disturbances persisted at 62 weeks, while patients had on average 5.5 kg again, the final weight loss was 7.9% of initial weight. The evaluation of the sensation of hunger and the desire to eat by analogue scales shows that they are growing at 10 weeks and they are still higher than before the scheme to 62 weeks. With the exception of the increase in pancreatic polypeptide, which in principle reduces food intake, all the hormonal changes caused by weight loss may explain the increased appetite and reducing the perception of fullness experienced during the "attack phase" regimes but also away from it. for more details and exclusive articles please visit |
