Dear URVASHI, As Japan attempts to control the high radiation levels from the Fukushima nuclear plant, countries all over the world are asking one question; is nuclear safe? Back home, the government plans to build a nuclear plant in Jaitapur, Maharashtra.[1] Like Fukushima, Jaitapur falls in an earthquake zone.[2] The technology being used here is still under review.[3] India seems to have decided that these plants are a "100% safe" even before conducting an analysis. April 11th will mark the one month anniversary of the tragedy in Japan. It is also the National Day of Action against Nuclear energy. On this day, people all across the country are coming together for a candlelight vigil to show solidarity with those suffering in Japan and asking our government to give up nuclear technology. You should join the National Day of Action against Nuclear energy. http://greenpeace.in/registration/attend-the-vigil.php The Prime Minister is yet to respond to a petition opposing the Jaitapur nuclear plant, signed by 73,000 people. This vigil will help show the government that the people of this country don’t want nuclear. Lots of people at the vigil will help get media attention and put more pressure on the government to act. Once again, the world has witnessed the horrors of a nuclear accident. These can be avoided by investing more in clean and safe renewable energy and maximising energy efficiency instead. Infact, some countries like Germany have shut down their nuclear plants after the incidents in Japan.[4] Ask the government to be responsible and say no to dangerous nuclear energy. Join the vigil now. http://greenpeace.in/registration/attend-the-vigil.php Thanks a billion! Karuna Raina Nuclear Campaigner Greenpeace India Sources: 1.
