Hope Zakat Special Issue 2011

From: Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital marketing@skm.org.pk

The Year at a Glance
Once again, the past year has been an eventful one for the medical division. The Hospital recorded a further increase in the level of activity in all clinical areas.

The Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Departments were jointly successful in commissioning Pakistan's first state-of-the-art cyclotron and PET-CT scanner in February 2010. The advent of PET-CT imaging has revolutionized the management of cancer and is, today, considered essential for the diagnosis and treatment of many forms of cancer. The PET-CT system cost US$ 5 million to purchase, install and commission. Over 1500 PET-CT studies were performed at the Hospital in 2010.

In order to manage the ever-increasing clinical workload at the Hospital, construction work on a new Inpatient Unit started in early 2010. The completion of the first phase in the coming weeks will result in the addition of 46 inpatient beds. When the second phase is completed, in 2012, it will double our current inpatient capacity.

The Karachi Diagnostic Centre & Clinic (KDC&C) was inaugurated on January 31st, 2010. Together with our Collection Centres and a Pathology Laboratory in Karachi, as well as the Karachi Walk-In Clinic, this represents tangible evidence of our commitment to opening a new Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in Karachi, in our role as one of the largest national charities in Pakistan. In October 2011, we inaugurated Medical Oncology services at the KDC&C. The centre is staffed by two fully-qualified, US-trained, Medical Oncologists, aided by junior medical and ancillary health staff. A number of patients from Karachi and surrounding areas are now able to receive first -class cancer treatment at the Karachi facility, irrespective of their ability to pay.

The Bone Marrow Transplantation Programme continues apace, with a number of adults and children successfully undergoing autologous bone marrow transplantation in 2011.

A number of initiatives have been taken to manage the ever increasing cancer workload. These include the augmentation of consultant medical staff and we were delighted to welcome a number of new consultants into the family of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre this year.  Read more...

MY SPECIAL MOMENT

Summer Volunteer Program

Volunteering at Shaukat Khanum Hospital has proved to be the most unforgettable experience of my life. Seeing such young children struggle between life and death has truly changed my perspective of life. I will never be able to forget their determination. A moment that truly left me speechless was when amidst my conversation with a little patient she said, 'Agar zindagi rahi to mai doctor banoon gi'. I was speechless. I couldn't think of anything to say and in my heart I just prayed for her recovery. Mehraab

I interacted with many children during the two week period I was at the Hospital. Each one of them was special in their own way and has a special place in my heart. I made friends with a four year old girl - Mahnoor. I was the only one whose name she remembered which made me feel very special. Each day she waited for me. One day she said, 'When I grow up, I will get married and my father will dance on my wedding.' The words of the four year old touched my heart deeply and I prayed for her long life and for the fulfillment of her father's dream. I can never forget that moment. I salute the cause of SKMT. It is truly a remarkable place where there is no discrimination between the rich and poor. May Allah give health to everyone suffering from cancer. Aleena

I was in the Chemotherapy Bay chatting with a patient when I saw the nurse approaching to administer the daily injection he was to receive. I turned away to let the staff do their work, but he grasped by hand firmly. I turned around and looked into his eyes that were pleading me to stay. Just then he murmured my name and closed his eyes as the needle went into his arm. He was not the only one who felt the pain. I felt it too. I stood there transfixed until the whole ordeal was over. No words were exchanged between us but we felt a bond. I could only manage a weak smile as I helped him put on his shoes and bid him farewell, as it was my last day at the Hospital. This time it was my eyes that said it all. Abdullah

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital is truly an institution we are proud to have in our country. The volunteer program was really special. The moment I will cherish for the rest of my life was when Nouman, a small child whom I was playing with, all of a sudden called me 'Chaachu'. I was really touched to hear him call me in such a loving way. Later when his dad came to take him, he blatantly refused to go and climbed up on my lap and held me tight. The little angel kept pushing his father away saying that he was going to stay with 'Chaachu'. It was truly a special moment for me. Annas

It was a great honor to be a part of the Summer Volunteer Programme at SKMCH. It gave me a sublime opportunity to do my bit for a great cause. It was quite traumatic to see innocent kids being victims of a deadly disease like cancer. But simultaneously it was great to see them being treated under a highly advanced and healthy environment. Working at SKMT has helped me take a closer look at life, which I was never able to do so before. My special moment was with a small girl named Shanza. She liked my bangles so I told her to wait while I brought some for her too. When I returned, she was nowhere to be found. I remained on the lookout for her for 3 days and eventually when we saw each other, I leapt forward to give her a hug. She whispered, 'Baji aap kahan chali gai thee? Mein apko kab se dhoond rahi thee. Mujhay laga kay aap mujhay milay baghair hi chali gai'. Tears rolled out of my eyes and not knowing what to do I gave her my ice-cream. I missed seeing her at the Hospital the remaining days but it was comforting to know that she was getting better. Maham
